Starting playgroup may be your child’s first experience of time spent away from their primary carer. It is a very important step for you and your child and we want to make this a happy experience for both of you. However, please remember that children are different and how they settle will vary from child to child.
We will take every step possible to help your child feel safe, comfortable and confident. Our staff are competent and caring and will make every effort to familiarise your child with their new surroundings. Be positive with your child, this will help them enormously.
We recommend that you stay with your child for the first few sessions. It gives you an opportunity to get to know the staff and a chance to talk about any concerns you may have. During this time, you must stay with your child but you will be guided on how to move away from your child as they grow in confidence.
When it is time to leave your child at Playgroup, a member of staff will support you in telling your child. It is very important to do this so your child knows you will only leave when you say so - not disappear in the night or at the park. Telling your child you are leaving should be done in a quick way, remaining upbeat as delaying the process of leaving can lead to increased anxiety. Please do not worry if your child is upset. From experience we know that this does not last for long; our great team of staff will help your child through this. If they have not settled after a short time, be reassured that we will contact you to come back. This can be a very emotional time for you both, remember we are here to help and support you.
